Regional Diversity Council

West of Scotland Regional Diversity Council (WSREC) is an organisation set up to eradicate all forms of discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, reduce inequality, promote human rights, and promote good relations between all communities in the West of Scotland and beyond. It is governed and run by minority ethnic communities in the West of Scotland. It offers training to organisations about promoting equality and elimination of discrimination and can also send out jobs via their networks.

RTS Scotland is an educational charity which organises informative and entertaining events and opportunities to meet with other people with an interest in the world of television. They also produce a Students Awards and a Scotland Television Awards. RTS Scotland offer Television and Production bursaries to help those from less affluent backgrounds to get into the industry.

Pact Indie Training
Scheme in Scotland

The Pact Indie Training Scheme in Scotland involves an 8-month paid placement with an independent production company, including a senior-level mentor and bespoke training.

TRC Media’s
RAD

RAD is an 8-month paid traineeship with a Scottish Production company, aimed at those who are under-represented within the TV industry including those with a disability, from Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority communities, or from disadvantaged backgrounds. Candidates fully supported by training and a mentor.

-SuperSizer – aimed at development executives in the Nations and Regions.

-Factual Fast Track – a development programme designed to accelerate careers of talented and creative factual producers.

-Format Lab – focuses on the development of formats in factual entertainment and trains up entry-level, development talent.

-Reset – a paid internship for people 25+ who are unemployed and offers a placement in the animation, visual effects, and games industries.

Outlander Training
Programme

Screen Scotland, Outlander and ScreenSkills co-fund traineeships across all departments on the Outlander production, including camera, costume, design, assistant director, art department, effects, and production, 20 trainees per series.

Channel 4 Production
Training Scheme

The Channel 4 Production Training Scheme is for entry level talent looking to break into the industry. Applicants must have degree in Film and TV or have previous experience through running, work experience, short term placements (no more than three months). It is aimed at those currently underrepresented in the industry, disabled people, people from a Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds or from lower socio-economic groups. It is run throughout the nations and regions – Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Belfast, Cardiff, North Wales, and Glasgow

The placements are paid and last for one year.

BBC Production Apprenticeship
Fast Track Scotland

Based at BBC Scotland, the apprenticeship is an 18-month programme with a mix of study and learning on the job. There are three main pathways – editorial, craft or production. Apprentices gain a SCQF7 qualification, Diploma in Creative and Digital Media.

Trainee Scheme

Based at BBC Scotland in Dumbarton, the BBC Production Advanced Trainee Scheme is an 18-month scheme working on the job and being supported by BBC Academy training.

BECTU
Base

BECTU Base is a free of charge point of contact for individuals and organisations who want to know more about various roles in scripted film and television. Services include monthly one to one session for CV feedback and next steps; short courses; networking; outreach including a range of events including panel discussions, presentations, careers stalls, CV workshops, round tables and training course inductions at colleges, universities, film festivals for community and individuals.

Hit the Ground
Running

Hit the Ground Running is training for runners and aimed at people at the start of their careers. The course is free and hands on.

Shorts

Sharp Shorts is a film development and production scheme for new and emerging talent. Grant funding is available to create ‘inspiring, engaging and boundary-pushing short films that resonate with audiences worldwide.’ It is aimed at new and emerging filmmakers living in Scotland, those looking to make transition to fiction from documentary or experimental film, as well as practitioners working in other mediums such as television.

First Features enables Scotland-based filmmakers to take career defining set towards their debut feature. There are two levels of awards, distinguished between early development (to treatment or first draft) and further development (second draft and beyond).

The SDI offers a range of opportunities including the Bridging the Gap initiative, which offers development training, a cash budget, and one year of international festival distribution to emerging filmmakers.

Foundation

Young Films Foundation offer a year-long script writing programme, with a week’s residency on the Isle of Skye. It aims to support Scotland’s up and coming screen writing talent, connect them with UK film and tv industry as mentors, inspiring experts, and commissioners.

GMAC

GMAC offer a range of programmes aimed at young people including workshops, BFI Film Academy, a Screen Progression programme for anyone aged 16 +. Plus, they offer opportunities for filmmakers including Little Pictures which commissions new talent and Screen Start which is an employability initiative to support 20 people from under-represented communities to gain access to and employment in the screen sector.
